We have several projects running and need public participation in order to grow and develop these projects to sustainable units. After many years in the field we find that many of our recipients need assistance in the following areas:
Skills development with regards to financial sustainability – Many of our recipients experience difficulty with basic tasks such as opening a bank account, building a fund to restock the tunnels and become financially independent. As they develop into self sustainable farmers they need assistance in planning, budgeting and proceeding to take action.
Assistance with logistics – When production is as it maximum, farmers may struggle to get the product to a market/end user. If you have time and means to transport the product you can help.
Motivation and recognition – A simple “well done” or “that`s amaising” can motivate a person. We all need a “big brother” that can lift our spirits, motivate and give recognition where due.
Funding to improve watering system and irrigation – As most of the recipients are located in rural areas the tunnels are designed to use minimum space and produce maximum yield, is low maintenance and easy to operate. When installing the tunnels the recipients receive a normal watering can in order to irrigate the pants. However as they evolve several needs relating to irrigation comes up and involve the following: 1. The need to install water tanks close to site; 2. Setting up an irrigation system that allows further water saving methods; or 3. something as simple as moving a tap closer to the site.
Additional food supplements – Recipients such as schools, crèche and day cares offer a meal for all children. The vegetables being produced is used to increase the nutritious value of each meal. By contributing any additional vegetables, dry food or supplements can assist with the fights against hunger.
Projects in need of assistance:
Field of Dreams
Children`s Centre, Hartebeespoort
This project was started in 2019 and are doing very well. They have 2 vegetable tunnels and a Herb tunnel that feed 85 children daily.
They need to restock the tunnels every 3 to 6 months and are in need of funds to order new plants, compost and fertiliser.
With feeding the children they run short of funds as every cent goes into additional supplements needed to run a nutritious feeding program.
